Easy Gemstone Identification Using Raman.
Raman
spectroscopy is an ideal method for the examination of
gemstones. The lack of sample preparation and
the non-destructive nature of Raman analysis
make it ideal for the analysis of high-value
gemstones.
Unknown gemstones can be identified by their unique Raman
signals and gemstone origin can be determined
through the Raman microscopy analysis of inclusions.
This
technique is especially valuable in the prevention of counterfeiting,
such as the identification of diamond from zircon.

Diamond or Zircon?
- The
Raman spectra of diamond and zircon are distinctly different
- Diamond
shows only one very strong and sharp Raman band at around
1328 cm-1
- Zircon
shows multiple Raman bands at around 349, 431, 967 and
1002 cm-1
